The three-week window before the rains when gutter cleaning matters most

In climates with steady drizzle, a partially clogged gutter drains slowly and mostly gets away with it. Southern California does not work that way. We go months with nothing, then take several inches in a single atmospheric river event. A gutter that handles a light shower fine will overflow within minutes of a real storm.

Where the overflow actually goes

When a gutter overflows, water does not politely fall to the lawn. It sheets backward over the rear lip – the side against your house – and runs down behind the gutter into the fascia board. That is the wooden band the gutter is mounted to.

• Fascia rot. Saturated wood softens, and the hangers holding your gutters begin pulling free.
• Siding and stucco staining. Repeated overflow leaves streaks that outlast the storm by years.
• Foundation pooling. Water dumping at the base of a wall instead of at a downspout is the beginning of most drainage complaints.
• Landscape washout. Concentrated flow strips mulch and cuts channels through beds.

Timing it right

Clean after the leaves have finished dropping but before the first significant storm – for most Santa Clarita properties that means late October into November. Clean too early and you will do it twice. Wait for the forecast to turn and every service in the valley is booked.

If your property has heavy tree cover, add a second clearing in late spring. Seed pods, blossoms, and the fine debris that comes off in the Santa Ana winds pack down into a mat that is far harder to remove once it has baked in the summer sun.

Clearing is only half the job

Scooping debris out of the channel does nothing if the downspout below it is still blocked. Any gutter service worth paying for flushes the system afterward and confirms water actually exits at the bottom of each downspout. Ask for that specifically – and ask that debris leaves with the crew rather than getting raked into your beds.
